March 18, 1913 - September 5, 2017
Lela Ann Ankney passed away peacefully September 5, 2017 at her home in El Reno. She was born March 18, 1913 in Eakly, OK to Charles and Matilda (Brooks) Hopkins. Lela graduated from El Reno High School in 1932. She was a member of Red Rock United Methodist Church, where her painting of Jesus still hangs on the stage. Mrs. Ankney was an optimistic, loving, kind, generous, and forgiving person. She led a very blessed life and she knew it. Her motto was “family is the best medicine.” There could be numerous pages to describe mother and grandma, but her example, legacy and life speaks for itself. This is evident by the numerous people who were unrelated to her that called her Aunt Lela and Grandma Lela. Over 250 people attended her 100th birthday, where she knew everyone there. Lela enjoyed china and oil painting later in life. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, David Ankney; son, Glen Ankney; son-in-law, Charles Link; 3 brothers; 4 sisters; and her “other” son, Ray Davidson, who came home from the Navy with Glen to visit for two weeks and lived with them for the next 8 years, and his wife Norma. Survivors include her daughter, Claretta Ruggiero and husband Frank of The Villages, FL; daughter-in-law, Patsy Ankney Lawless and husband Bob of El Reno; grandchildren, Tim Ankney and wife Bonita of Yukon, Tamala Shrum and husband Danny of El Reno; Tonya Ashley and husband Jimmy of El Reno; Debra Link-Herold and husband Jim of West Concord, MN; Mark Link and wife Kaari of Lakeville, MN, and Kim Behrens and husband Roger of Chanhassen, MN; 13 great grandchildren; 1 great great grandchild; special friend, Charlotte Stewart; and numerous relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held Saturday, September 9, 2017 at 10:30 AM at Red Rock United Methodist Church with burial to follow in the Red Rock Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Wilson Funeral Home.
